Frequently Asked Questions Why should I invest in Viewbox? Viewbox has two main strong points that should place it at the top of your list of Cephalometric Software: it was designed and developed by an orthodontist, so you may be sure that it will cover your needs in orthodontic diagnosis, and, it is completely customizable, so that you can configure it to work according to your preferences and to measure and analyze almost anything that you can imagine.
Other software may give you the ability to customize the cephalometric analysis and to add new measurements, but none gives you the versatility of Viewbox. You can change/add/delete points, measurements, analyses, superimpositions, hard/soft-tissue ratios, digitization protocols, colours, font styles, etc. Viewbox is perhaps the only cephalometric software that can be configured by the user to measure not only a lateral ceph, but a frontal, a panoramic, a submentovertex, a facial photograph, a dental cast, animal radiographs, microscope photographs, anything you like. The latest version includes morphometric tools for advanced analyses and transparency of radiographs for structural superimposition.
Viewbox is currently being used in Orthodontic Departments and private practices around the world. For a list of publications that have used Viewbox for their cephalometric analysis.

Can I 'morph' a facial photograph? Yes, Viewbox supports morphing. This means that you can predict the soft-tissue changes on the tracing (using Viewbox's comprehensive VTO tools) and then have Viewbox change the patient's facial photograph to match your treatment prediction (see the ). Viewbox can show (and print) the pre-treatment and prediction photographs side by side, and you can also show the tracing and related measurements on top of the photographs. Can I define a new cephalometric point? Yes, with Viewbox you can define as many points as you wish. These points can then be used for measuring new cephalometric angles and distances.
Can I define 'calculated points'? 'Calculated points' are points that you do not digitize but are calculated based on the position of other points. An example is point AO, the projection of point A on the occlusal plane, used for the Wits measurement. Viewbox has 14 different types of calculated points that you can define. Can I define new measurements and analyses? Yes, you can define measurements, enter your own normal values and group your measurements in your own analyses. Viewbox has more than 29 different measurement types that you can use (angles, distances, area measurements, etc.).
When I digitize a ceph, I do not want to digitize all the points but just a few. Can I do that? Yes, you can digitize as many points as you like and in whatever sequence you want. Viewbox will, of course, calculate only those measurements that can be calculated from the points that you have digitized.
I am accustomed to viewing the lateral cephalogram facing to the left. Can Viewbox do this? Yes, you can customize the lateral ceph this way. I am concerned about errors in landmark identification. Viewbox gives you the option to digitize each point more than once. It then calculates the average position of the multiple attempts and uses this as the point's position.
I want to measure the area of the airway. Can Viewbox do that?
Yes, you can define a few new points that mark the outline of the airway, and a new measurement that measures the surface area enclosed by these points. I am doing research on rats and I want to measure some measurements on rat radiographs. Viewbox can help you here as well. You can define a 'rat radiograph' from scratch. Define the points that you are going to use, the measurements (including normal values), the way you want the tracing drawn (colours, lines, etc.), the digitization sequence, etc. Which digitizers are supported by Viewbox?
Almost any digitizer can work with Viewbox. It is recommended that you get one with a translucent surface, so that you can place the radiograph directly on the digitizer. However, a better choice may be the use of a scanner with a transparency adapter. With a scanner you enter the image of the radiograph into the computer and you then digitize this image on the screen using the mouse. A good scanner may cost the same as a digitizer and you can also use it to scan documents, photographs and slides. A scanner allows you to take full advantage of Viewbox's, such as auto edge-locking and auto location of points.
Can I do dental cast measurements? You can define points and measurements for dental casts. To digitize a dental cast, you can use a photocopy of the cast and place it on a digitizer, or you can scan the dental cast using your scanner, or you can obtain an image of the cast using a video or a digital camera. I have radiographs from various x-ray machines and they have different magnifications.
Can I superimpose them? Yes, Viewbox can scale all radiographs to 'life' size, taking into consideration each radiograph's magnification factor. You can then superimpose them properly. I want to print the tracing in a letter I am sending to the referring dentist. How can I do that? Viewbox can send the cephalometric measurement results and the tracing directly to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Or, you can copy the tracing from Viewbox and paste it into other Windows programs.
I have a sample of patients and I want to do statistical calculations. Must I copy all measurements of each patient from Viewbox to my statistics software by hand? Viewbox has an Export function that writes all measurements of all your patients to a text file. This file can then be read directly by your statistics program. Alternatively, you can export all measurements directly to Excel.
How many radiographs can I superimpose? Viewbox can show and superimpose up to ten radiographs. Can I do structural superimpositions?
Yes, Viewbox supports image transparency, so you can load two radiographs with their images, make the top one semi-transparent, and move and rotate it so that it superimposes on the one underneath (see the ). After structural superimpositioning, you can transfer points from one to the other. Can I print a frontal tracing next to a lateral tracing? Yes, Viewbox can show different tracings in the same window. These can also be printed. Can I use Viewbox for image archiving?
No, Viewbox is not an imaging program and cannot be used as a database for images. Does Viewbox include practice management features? No, Viewbox is not a practice management program and it is not a database for patient information. However, it has capabilities that enable it to integrate with practice management software. Is Viewbox copy protected? The Viewbox CD is not copy protected (you can make copies of the CD-ROM for backup) but Viewbox needs a key-number to work (not the demo version). The key-number is specific to the computer it is installed.
